Sports Inclusion Development Programme
What is the Sports Inclusion Development Programme?
In 2006, the Dormant Accounts Fund earmarked €2 million nationally for projects which addressed the imbalance in opportunities for people with physical, learning and sensory disabilities to participate in sport and physical activity.
Sport Ireland in collaboration with the network of Local Sports Partnerships identified the need to appoint dedicated Sports Inclusion Development Officers at county level to address current gaps in the provision of sport, recreation and physical activity for people with disabilities. To address this need, Offaly Sports Partnership made an application to the Dormant Accounts Fund; and funding was approved for two years.
In March 2008, Offaly Sports Partnership employed Claire Grehan as the Sports Inclusion Development Officer. In 2010, the Dormant Accounts funding allocated to this project was expended. Additional funding was secured from Sport Ireland for this project to continue into 2011. The initial phase of this programme concluded at the end of 2011.
In 2013, further funding was secured from Sport Ireland to enable the employment of a part time (three days per week) Sports Inclusion Development Officer. In February 2014, Offaly Sports Partnership employed Aoife Byrne as the new Sports Inclusion Development Officer.
